Helena Hof ist Assistenzprofessorin am ISEK - Ethnologie und Projektleiterin des SNF Starting Grant-Projekts „Provisional Futures: Migrants as wanted workers, yet temporary residents (TEMP Migration)“. Sie hat an der Universität Bonn im Bachelor mit Schwerpunkt Japan und Singapur studiert und hält Master- und Doktortitel der Waseda-Universität in Tokio. Vor ihrer Tätigkeit am ISEK war sie in Lehre und Forschung an der Waseda-Universität und der Sophia-Universität in Japan tätig, als Oberassistentin am Asien-Orient-Institut der Universität Zürich und als Forscherin am Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung multireligiöser und multiethnischer Gesellschaften. Sie war außerdem assoziierte Forscherin am Institute of Asian Migrations der Waseda-Universität in Japan (laufend), am Asia Research Institute der National University of Singapore und am Center for Metropolitan Studies, University of Sao Paulo, Brasilien.

Helena Hofs ethnografisch fundierte Arbeit untersucht die Auswirkungen des demografischen Wandels auf Migration, Mobilität und soziokulturelle Transformation. Ihre regionale Expertise umfasst Asien (insbesondere Japan und Singapur), die Schweiz und Brasilien und konzentriert sich auf die Komplexität der Lebenswelten von Menschen in globalen Metropolen. In ihrem aktuellen, vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNF) geförderten Projekt arbeitet Helena Hof mit ihrem Forschungsteam mit dem Global Migration Institute der Toronto Metropolitan University in Kanada und dem Institute of Asian Migrations der Waseda-Universität in Japan zusammen und analysiert, wie befristete Arbeitsverhältnisse und Aufenthaltsgenehmigungen sowie soziale Differenzierungskategorien wie Geschlecht, Ethnizität und Klasse migrantisches Leben beeinflussen und das Verständnis von Arbeit und eines lebenswerten Lebens problematisieren.
