Hatice Soeylemez obtained her BA from Boğaziçi University (Istanbul, Turkey) History Department in 2005. In 2008, she got her MA from Center for East and Southeast Asian Studies (Lund, Sweden) with her thesis titled 'Islamic Popular Culture in Malaysia: The Rise and Transformation of Nasyid Music', which discussed at length the proliferation of islamic nasyid music in Malaysia. Between 2011 and 2013, she worked at SESRIC (Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Center for Islamic Countries) as a researcher. Since September 2013, she has been a PhD Candidate at the institute. Her fieldwork research is in Ankara (the capital) and Bodrum (southwestern city) of Turkey. She is doing research on the proliferation of alternative education in Turkey, particularly on the cooperative school models.
