Excursion Central Asia
In Summer 2026, Chair Peter Finke will offer an excursion to Central Asia—a region that remains a blind spot for many people and for anthropology in comparison to other parts of the world. While the exact destination has not yet been finalized, it will take place in one of the following countries: Uzbekistan, Qazaqstan, or Mongolia.
The excursion, which includes an integrated language course and summer school, will introduce students to the region and enable them to conduct research on a range of topics. The final dates and destination will be announced after consultations with participants and local partners. If conditions allow, students may extend their stay in the field independently.
Learning outcomes:
- Students will become familiar with a new region through an introduction to its language, culture, and society.
- Students will develop methodological skills and carry out a small research project based on their own interests.
- Students will gain first-hand experience in the field and practice ethnographic research, including the professional and personal skills this entails.
Requirements for participation:
- Submission of a letter of motivation by February 15, 2026
- Completion of a first-year course in anthropology or a related discipline
- Completion of the course “Doing Ethnography” (Methodenvertiefung)
- Completion of the Regional Module „Anthropology of Central Asia"
The excursion is open to BA and MA students. Upon successful completion of both the excursion and the language course, students will receive 6 ECTS credits for each.
Please send your letter of motivation (DOCX, 16 KB) to Meltem Sancak (meltem.sancak@uzh.ch) by February 15, 2026.
