Work and Labour in an Interconnected World

Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The summer school Southeast Asia in Motion: Labour and Work in an Interconnected World will take place this upcoming semester. The preliminary dates for this summer school are the 4th until the 24th of July 2021.

We have outlined two different programs in order to make sure that the summer school will be able to go ahead, no matter what the situation with coronavirus will be in the summer.

Firstly, if the current plans for vaccinations in the different partnering countries go ahead successfully, and the situation improves accordingly, we will hold the summer school at Gadjah Mada University, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. There, we will be joined by students and lecturers from several other partnering universities in Southeast Asia. The summer school will consist both of on-site learning (input lectures from various researchers, discussion of common readings, setting up of research design) and of smaller ethnographic research projects that students will carry out in groups. At the moment Indonesia is planning to start mass vaccinations at the end of January, so we are hoping to know a bit more about whether plans for holding the summer school in Yogyakarta will be possible by the end of March.

The second option is to conduct parallel projects in our respective countries. In this case, the summer school will take place simultaneously in the various participating countries. Student from different countries will be grouped together, and will each conduct an ethnographic research on a person doing a particular profession in their own city (i.e. a hairdresser, cleaner, factory worker, etc.). At the end, the students will bring together their results in a collaborative public output. We are still considering what this public output could be, but we are thinking along the lines of a working paper, a short video, or a series of photographs.

The summer school is open to both BA an MA students. A prerequisite for attending the summer school is that you have completed your first year BA courses, done at least one methodenvertiefung, and that you have attended the Indonesian language course offered by our department. This language course will be held again in FS21, so if you are interested in participating, make sure that you sign up for that course.

There will be an online information meeting on Monday the 8th of February, from 10.00 – 11.00am. Please register for this information meeting by sending an email to: If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Molly.
