Research & teaching

A central focus of my research and teaching are museums, exhibition practice and the possibilities of critical (reflection on) knowledge production. I am focusung on the history and theory of exhibiting and cultural heritage practices as well as on current developments in the field of museums and collections. Ethnological museum practice and the debates on collection provenances in a (post-)colonial context have been a particular focus for many years.

I find it important to combine my research perspectives with a practical interest. For a long time, I have been working at the intersection of (ethnographic) research, curatorial practice and new perspectives for a reflexive cultural management. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to implement new formats of collaborative exhibition and research in a responsible position in several large exhibition and museum projects. I see curating itself as a research practice, just as I am interested in the question of how research can be conceived with and in formats of curation.

Research interests:

  • History, theories and practices of exhibiting
  • Museum anthropology, epistemologies of ethnographic museums
  • Cultural heritage practices, memory cultures
  • Political anthropology (cultural policy, ethnography of planning and institutionalization processes)
  • Material and visual culture studies
  • Collection and museum ethics, provenance research
