Mutiara Kurniasari obtained her Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. She obtained her Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in which she conducted research on peasant resistance movements against extractive industry in the Kendeng Mountains, Central Java. Before beginning her doctoral studies, she worked as a GEDSI Analyst at World Resources Institute Indonesia, where her work engaged gender and social inclusion across air quality, just transition, and transport decarbonisation programs, alongside separate research on subak governance in Bali. She is part of the OFFGRID Urban Indonesia project as a doctoral researcher, supervised by Prof. Dr. Annuska Derks. In her current PhD project, she will be looking at socio-spatial inequality in Indonesia, considering how customary governance structures, gender relations, and community-level social dynamics shape the uneven experience of climate and energy transitions.
