Indira Alibayeva won the H. Russell Bernard Graduate Student Paper Prize, which is given by the Society for Anthropological Sciences (a section of the AAA). Indira's research was supervised by Professor Peter Finke.
Social Cognition in Post-Soviet Times: Categorization and Ethnic Ambiguity in Southern Kazakhstan
The paper examines how people in southern Kazakhstan classify and categorize people around them. The work innovates by integrating cognitive methods—or cultural domain analysis—to explore people’s shared concepts and categories. Using free listing and pile sorting tasks, Mrs. Alibayeva could measure how people perceive similarities and differences between groups and discern the historical impact of Soviet nationality policy on how Kazakhs today understand ethnic divisions.
The H. Russell Bernard Graduate Student Paper Prize is a bi-annual award from the Society for Anthropological Sciences (SAS). SAS is a section of the American Anthropological Association that promotes empirical research and interdisciplinary methodologies. H. Russell Bernard, after whom the award is named, is a prominent American anthropologist who has dedicated much of his career to developing and teaching research methods.
