ISEK - Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies The Diversity of Nonreligion

Projects

Bild Science Van

In our four ethnographic/empirical studies we focus on the history, worldview, aims and activities of nonreligious individuals and groups in India & Germany, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and Sweden, thus covering both, societies considered highly religious and highly secular. The attempt thereby is not to define “religion” and “nonreligion” but to understand why and how people declare themselves as nonreligious or are described as such:

What understandings of “religious” beliefs, behaviours and belongings are implied in such declarations and descriptions, and what consequences does the apparent nonreligiosity have for their way of life, i.e. their own beliefs, behaviours and belongings?
