Special Opportunity for MA-Research on Migration

Dear students,

We would like to draw your attention to an excellent opportunity for conducting research as part of your MA thesis in Social Anthropology within the framework of a larger project.

As you may have heard, ISEK–Ethnologie is participating in an EU-based research project on migration called HumMingBird. The overall aim of this project is to obtain better data for understanding migration and develop future scenarios.

Unlike classical migration theories postulate, more recent contributions indicate that the drivers of irregular migration are diverse, and so are the perceptions of opportunity structures, that migration often happens stepwise instead of targeted and that, while en route, people are likely to change their aspirations as they deal with obstacles, develop new networks and reconfigure their place in the world. In short, more knowledge is needed about the daily life that migration entails, and this is where we come into play. We will conduct research in migration hubs and along transit routes, such as Istanbul, Italy or Bosnia, and various interview sequences with migrants who have already settled in Switzerland and Italy.

All interested students are warmly invited to participate in this exciting project as part of their MA research. For any further questions please contact daniela.dietz@uzh.ch or peter.finke@uzh.ch by 4 December 2020.
