Blockseminar-Ankündigung Ethnologie: (Same-sex) Marriage, Kinship and Heteronormativity

Dear All,

I am very pleased to announce that I will offer a seminar to: "(Same-sex) Marriage, Kinship and Heteronormativity: An Introduction to Queer Studies in Social Anthropology" It is a seminar but conceptualised in a format that resembles more closely a workshop. It would be a pleasure to have as many students as possible participating in this course. I am looking forward to meet you there. Let me give you a short introduction into the course:

   (Same-sex) Marriage, Kinship and Heteronormativity: 
An Introduction to Queer Studies in Social Anthropology

You will be introduced to queer studies in social anthropology, its theories, paradigms, and leading thinkers. We will ask ourselves questions like what is queer studies, how does it benefit social anthropology and what can queer studies gain from incorporating thoughts from social anthropology. Given its topicality, we will start from the opening of the institution of marriage for same-sex couples and then tackle issues related to these discussions. How can we, as students and scholars, think critically about marriage equality and scrutinise the changes it brings to conceptions of kinship and family, the queer community and the society at large? This course will provide a collaborative space for students to debate and think. It will offer tools, perspectives, and theories to critically engage in the (political and academic) debates surrounding queer studies, LGBT*-issues, new kinship studies, (same-sex) marriage, and identity politics.

Since this is a special format and you will need to get access to literature, please contact Paul Adam Fehr until the 21.01.2019. Students are asked to read articles and book chapters and prepare tasks PRIOR to the seminar. Further information will be provided. Please pay attention to the dates. The course begins on the 04.02.2019 and ends on the 08.02.2019.

The schedule is: Monday 4.2. 9-12 and 13-16 o'clock, Tuesday 5.2. 9-12 and 13-16 o'clock, Wednesday 6.2. 9-12 and 13-16 o'clock, Thursday 7.2. 9-12 and 13-16 o'clock, Friday 8.2. 9-13 o'clock. Essays will be due on the 05.04.2019.
